Create an Understanding Demographics report

Note: The procedure below uses the UK data and geographies, as shown by some of the screenshots. However, the general procedure can be used to create a similar report type available for any other country.

To create an Understanding Demographics report:
  1. Click on Reporting button the Reporting menu option.
  2. Select the Investigate an Area report category and choose the Understanding Demographics Mosaic 7 report. The Understanding Demographics Mosaic 7 wizard is displayed. Click on the image below to view the window.
  3. Report wizard

Note: If you can't see the Understanding Demographics Mosaic 7 report listed you may need to expand the number of reports seen by clicking on the nn more reports button to the right of the screen, or you may need to change the data vintage to UK20.

  1. For What areas do you want to assess?, click Standard, Saved or New. (see About geographies/catchments)
    • Standard – lets you select predefined areas such as UK counties, postal sectors, and parliamentary constituencies.
    • Saved – lets you select areas that you have previously created and saved so that they can be re-used.
    • New – lets you create a single travel time or distance catchment around a specific area of interest.

If you would like to remove an area from the list, click on the Remove button to the left of area name in the Selected pane. Alternatively, if you want to remove all areas from the list, click on Clear All link at the bottom right-hand side of the Selected pane.

Note: If you create report using a catchment, then the opacity of the catchment is set so that you can see the map details through the catchment layer on the map presented by the dashboard. The centre or starting point (e.g. postcode or latitude/longitude) that you used to create the catchment is displayed on the map as a red star.

  2. For How would you like your target areas reported?, select the appropriate option. (see Combined or separated areas)
  3. For example, in the UK if you were interested in the areas LE3, LE6, LE9 and LE12 you can report on these areas separately or combined together. Separately would give you four individual reports whereas combined will give you just one.

  4. For What base area do you want to use for comparison?, click Standard. The Standard Geography window is displayed. Click on the image below to view the window.

    Standard Geography wizard

    • In the Available pane, drag the scroll bar to display the geography you require and click on its + symbol.
    • If you would like to remove an area from the list, click on the Remove button to the left of area name in the Selected pane. Alternatively, if you want to remove all areas from the list, click on Clear All link at the bottom right-hand side of the Selected pane.

Note: Base area for comparison is an average set of values that is used to compare with the data from your selected area. This is usually the whole of the country, but if needed, you can choose a more localised comparison area from the Available pane.

  5. In the Dashboard name text box, type a unique name for the generated report, for example, based on the street name and the catchment size of the area being examined.
  6. If you would like to see top-level statistics for the target areas which you have selected, click Stats. The statistics are calculated for the selected target areas and displayed in a new browser window. When you have finished reviewing the statistics, close the browser window.
  7. Click Generate to create the report.
  8. A confirmation message is displayed. Click Close. The Reporting page is re-displayed with your new report shown in the Recent Reports List.

  9. You've now created the report, but how do you interpret it?

Note: The date you created or generated the dashboard is displayed in the footer of the dashboard.
