Adding data

You can add data to the map by picking it from the data available to you under your Location Analyst subscription or you can import your own files containing:

  • the locations of your customers by postcode.
  • lists of outlets such as stores, competitors, pubs, and schools.

The new data is always added under the appropriate layer heading and in alphabetical order. Layers that are switched on before adding new data will remain switched on; therefore, new layers may be hidden behind others.

For details on how to import data into Location Analyst see Importing a data file.

The following data can be visualised on your map:

Option

Comments

A standard geography boundary

Lets you select a specific geography depending on your subscription, e.g. a postal area, postal sector.

A standard geography is one which is pre-built for Location Analyst (for example, in the UK: Countries, Postal Sectors, Nielsen Regions and Electoral Wards etc), and not one which you have created yourself.

Adding a standard geography to the map, creates a layer under the Standard Geographies category in the Layers panel.

A saved geography

Lets you select a geography which you previously saved when you created a report, or when you created a catchment via the Mapping page (Catchments > Create Catchment) or the Manage Data page (Create Catchments - Status > Create Catchment). These can be selected by navigating to the appropriate folder and item under the top-level folder called My Saved Geographies.

You can also add a saved geography which has been shared with you by a colleague using their Location Analyst account. These can be selected by navigating to the appropriate folder and item under the top-level folder called Geographies Shared With Me.

Adding a saved geography to the map, creates a layer under the Saved Geographies category in the Layers panel.

An imported file

Lets you add a specific file which you have previously imported into Location Analyst such as a data file containing competitor locations or lists of locations of your customers.

If you chose the option to append one or more subscription-dependent segmentations to your imported file, you will be given the option to apply a Single Colour or a Preset Theme to the points if you change the style of the layer.

Adding an imported file to the map, creates a layer under the Imported Data Files category in the Layers panel.

Segmentation points or Competitor locations

Lets you select the data for a segmentation to which you have subscribed, e.g. in the UK, Mosaic UK 6, and also competitor location databases such as ShopPoint – Retail Locations and CGA – Licensed Premises.

Adding segmentation points to the map, creates a layer under the Segmentation Layers category in the Layers panel. Similarly, adding competitor locations to the map, creates a layer under the Competitor Data category in the Layers panel.

A data variable, e.g. Household income in each area

Lets you add a custom variable that you have previously created, or one to which you have a subscription. Custom variables can be selected by navigating to the appropriate folder and item under the top-level folder called Custom Variables and then the subfolder called My Saved Variables.

You can also add a custom variable which has been shared with you by a colleague using their Location Analyst account. These can be selected by navigating to the appropriate folder and item under the top-level folder called Custom Variables and then the subfolder called Variables Shared With Me.

Adding a data variable to the map, creates a layer under the Standard Geographies category in the Layers panel.

The output of a report

Lets you add output data from any of the following reports to the map: the Assess Area Potential report from the Analyse Multiple Areas category and any of the reports from the Evaluate Local Competitors category.

Adding the output from a report to the map, creates a layer under the Report Outputs category in the Layers panel.
