Layer styling panel

You can edit the way that your layers look by accessing the Edit layer styling pane. To do this click on the icon next to the layer name.

Note: A icon is used to indicate any layer which uses a segmentation such as Financial Strategy Segment 4, Mosaic UK 7, Mosaic New Zealand or Mosaic Australia.

For layers under the Segmentation Layers category, the icon is inactive and therefore does not display the Edit layer styling. This is because the segmentation colours are pre-defined and cannot be changed and there are no other layer styling options.

However, for some layers the icon is active and therefore styling is permitted. Styling is available for a layer if a subscription-dependent segmentation has been used as a custom variable or has been appended to imported Locations or Customers data where you have then applied a Preset Theme (for further information, see below). This latter option lets you view your customers point data on the map using the segmentation colours instead of a single standard colour.

Changing the shape, border colour or fill colour is reflected by the icon that is displayed to the left of the layer name in the Layers panel.

Depending on the type of layer the following can be changed in the Edit layer styling panel:

Option

Properties

Border

The Border option lets you select or set the border styles for areas and catchments. The following border properties are available:

  • Colour – the border colour, selected from a drop-down colour picker panel.
  • Thickness (1 to 5) – the thickness of the border in pixels, selected using a slider.
  • Opacity – the opacity (0% to 100%) of the border, selected using a slider.

Fill

The Fill option lets you select or set the fill styles for areas and catchments. The properties which are displayed are dependent on the type of layer.

For all layers except those created using an imported brick file or the output from a ranking report, the following fill properties are available:

  • Colour – the fill colour, selected from a drop-down colour picker panel.
  • Opacity – the opacity (0% to 100%) of the fill, selected using a slider.

For all layers that have been created using an imported brick file or the output from a ranking report, the following fill properties are available:

  • Theme – the colour theme to be used for the bands. There are 35 colour themes available, presented in a columns. A theme is selected by clicking anywhere within the column. The colours from the selected theme are displayed in the Colour boxes under Band Customisation at the bottom of the Edit layer styling pane. Each theme is named based on the colours or types of colours (dark, pastel etc.) that it uses, and one of five different schemes:
    • Sequential – comprises colours which are ordered sequentially from light to dark. The scheme is useful for data that has low to high values. The light colours can be used for the low values, and the dark colours can be used for the high values.
    • Diverging – comprises a light hue in the mid-range which grows darker towards a different colour which is used at each end. The scheme is useful for data where there is a distinct mid-range critical, median or zero value. The mid-range value is highlighted by the lighter colour, while the colours towards each end can represent the differences.
    • Qualitative – comprises colours which are generally unrelated colours which visually look quite different. This scheme is useful for data where the colours represent nominal values rather than magnitudinal values.
    • Paired Qualitative – is a qualitative scheme where the colours are paired: one light and one dark. This is useful for data where there is some relationship between pairs of values.
    • Accent Qualitative - is a qualitative scheme where the colours are combinations of saturated, darker and lighter hues. This is useful where you want to emphasize or accent data representing small areas.
  • Opacity – the opacity (0% to 100%) of the fill, selected using a slider.

Labels

The Labels option lets you select or set the styles for all labels associated with the layer. The following label properties are available:

  • Show Labels – whether labels are displayed or hidden (On or Off).
  • Size – the size of all labels (S, M or L), selected using a slider.
  • Colours – the fill and outline colour combination for all labels, selected using a drop-down list.

Catchment Centre Point

The Catchment Centre Point option lets you select or set the styles for the centre point of certain types of catchment (see the Note below this table). The following centre point properties are available:

  • Show – whether the centre point is displayed or hidden (On or Off).
  • Colour – the fill colour of the centre point, selected from a drop-down colour picker panel.
  • Size – the size of the centre point (S, M or L), selected using a slider.
  • Shape – the shape of the centre point (Circle, Square, Star or Triangle), selected from a drop-down list.

Shape

The Shape option lets you select or set the styles for the shapes representing points on the map in layers under the Imported Data Files category. The following shape properties are available:

  • Colour. For a layer where no segmentations have been appended to the data, a drop-down colour picker panel lets you select and apply a single colour to all shapes or points within this layer.

For a layer where one or more segmentations have been appended to the data, the Edit layer styling pane provides two options:
    • Single Colour – a drop-down colour picker panel lets you select and apply a single standard colour to all points within this layer.
    • Preset Theme – lets you use a drop-down this to select and apply the themed colours associated with one of the segmentations which you have appended to the data. The points within this layer are then coloured according to where they are on the map and their associated segmentation Group.
  • Size (S, M or L)
  • Shape (Circle, Square, Star or Triangle)

Theme Bands

The following properties are available for numeric data fields in layers that have been created using an imported brick file or the output from a ranking report:

  • No. of Bands (2 – 8)
  • Calculation Method – defines the method used to calculate the range of each band. It can have one of 3 values:
    • Equal Volume – the number of records in each band are the same.
    • Equal Width – the intervals for each band are the same so the number of records in each band may be different.
    • Custom – you can set the band intervals using the Range From and Range To fields under Band Customisation below.
  • Band Customisation
    • Name – you can use this to define a custom name for the band that is displayed on the map. If you do not define a custom name, then the band is identified by the values given to the Range From and Range To fields.
    • Range From – the minimum value (integer or decimal) for the band. For Equal Volume or Equal Width calculations, this is a read-only field. For a Custom calculation you must enter the value, but you must ensure that there is no gap or overlap with the previous band (if any).
    • Range To – the maximum value (integer or decimal) for the band. For Equal Volume or Equal Width calculations, this is a read-only field. For a Custom calculation you must enter the value, but you must ensure that there is no gap or overlap with the next band (if any).
    • Colour – this displays the colour to be used for the band and is obtained from the theme which you have selected for the layer.

Note: The Catchment Centre Point styles are available for drivetime, walktime, drive distance, and distance ring catchments that have been created and saved as a geography; and then added as data to the map using the A saved geography option. The “centre point” represents the origin of the drivetime, walktime, drive distance, or distance ring catchments, in terms of travel time or distance. By default a small red star is used as the centre point, but you can change this using the Edit layer styling panel described above.

Hand-drawn catchments and catchments created by combining bricks do not have an origin therefore no "centre point" is displayed. This means the Catchment Centre Point styles are not available for these types of catchment.
