About geographies/catchments

The term geography and catchment are interchangeable. Standardised areas are often referred to as geographies, whereas if you are assessing an area based on a place or postcode they are often referred to as catchments.

When you create reports in Location Analyst, you will need to select an area to assess. There are 3 types to choose from:

Areas

Description

Standard

The areas listed will depend upon your subscription. For the UK, most subscribers will have the following enabled:

  • Countries
  • UK
  • Postal area, districts and sector

Saved

Areas that have been created previously and saved so that they can be re-used. This is useful if you regularly run reports on the same area.

New

If you would like to create a new area to investigate, select this option as you will be able to specify your area by:

  • postal area
  • placename
  • street address

You can then create a travel time or distance catchment around the specified area.
