How to create a new travel time or distance catchment

The way you create a Travel Time or Distance catchment is the same for all reports involving an area. Travel Time catchments can be divided into Drivetime, Drive Distance and Walk Time catchments, while Distance catchments comprise Distance Ring catchments only.

Note: The option to create Walk Time catchments is subscription-dependent, and therefore may not be available to you.

Hand-drawn catchments may also be created directly onto the map. For more details see Drawing a catchment.

In the example below you will create a 15 minute off-peak Drivetime catchment based on an area of your choice for a report type from the Investigate an Area category.

  1. For What areas do you want to assess?, click New. The Create Catchment window is displayed:
  2. Note: The text What areas do you want to assess? is specific to the report wizards for the Investigate an Area category. For other categories and report types the text is worded according to the report type. However, the operation of creating the catchment is the same.

  3. Type a postcode (or DPID), placename, postal address, or lat/long coordinates for the location into the text box. If you are using a postal address, separate each address element with a comma and try to include the town or city. If you are using lat/long coordinates ensure they are in WGS84 format and up to 6 decimal points, with the latitude first followed by the longitude and separated by a comma, e.g. 52.952557,-0.936455.
  4. Click Find location. The location is displayed on the map as a marker icon .
  5. If required, click and drag the marker icon to the correct location on the map.
  6. Select the catchment type Travel Time.
  7. Select the Off-Peak time of day.
  8. In the Catchment Size text box, type 15 (minutes).
  9. Note: In the example you are creating one Drivetime catchment based on 15 minutes. However you can create up to five Drivetime catchments in one go. Simply enter the different times in minutes separated by a comma, e.g. 5,10,15.

  10. In the Catchment name text box, type a name to identify the catchment, for example based on the name of the area you are investigating.
  11. To add the catchment to saved geographies for future use, select Yes.
  12. From the Folder name drop-down list , select the folder where you would like your new catchment to be saved.
  13. Click OK. The Create Catchment window is closed.
  14. Note: Your catchment will only be available in the data vintage you created it in.

The next time you create a report and require 15 minute drivetime catchment around the selected area, in the Report wizard, under What areas do you want to assess?, click Saved, the Saved Geographies window appears. Use the drop-down list to navigate to the directory where you saved your catchment.
